I-210 Bridge

An important component of the Foothill Extension from Pasadena to Azusa is the I-210 Bridge. The bridge, a 584-linear-foot light rail bridge traversing the eastbound lanes of the I-210 Freeway between Baldwin and Santa Anita Avenues, will allow connection between the existing Sierra Madre Villa Station and the future Arcadia Station. The I-210 Bridge replaces one removed after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and is being built by Skanska USA, the design build team awarded the contract in June 2010.

The new concept for the bridge has been developed and finalized in collaboration with the Skanska design team which includes nationally recognized public art professional Andrew Leicester. He was selected by a committee of local community stakeholders representing cities from throughout the corridor to envision a new gateway to the San Gabriel Valley. The bridge design received final approval from oversight agencies including Metro and Caltrans in November 2011.

A Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley: A key element of the design will use the supporting columns to represent the respected basket-making tradition of the local Native American settlers of the region. These larger than life visual elements also pay homage to the sculptural tradition of Route 66 with its oversized architectural landmarks.

Construction

The I-210 Bridge is a dual track light rail bridge that will span 584 feet across the eastbound lanes of the I-210 Freeway. It will be constructed of steel reinforced concrete using (1) a temporary support known as falsework to support the bridge span across the freeway and (2) formwork which acts as a mold to help shape the concrete. The formwork will require specialized assembly to ensure the artistic design elements envisioned by artist Andrew Leicester, the project’s concept advisor, are maintained. The falsework and formwork will be removed when the concrete has hardened (or cured) and the bridge is strong enough to support itself. When completed, the lowest part of the bridge will be 17 feet above the I-210 Freeway, easily allowing the tallest of trucks to pass. Additionally, the structure is being designed to meet any future widening needs for the freeway.

Project Schedule:

The engineering design work, headed by AECOM (Skanska USA’s lead design subcontractor), began immediately after project award to take the bridge design from artistic concept (click here to view a gallery of images) to final design schematics. In November 2011, the Skanska team received approval for the final design by the Construction Authority Board of Directors, as well as Metro and Caltrans. Pre-construction efforts including mobilization and third party coordination also began immediately after project award. Since this is a design-build project, the construction work began in April 2011, while design was still being finalized. Major construction began in June 2011 and will take about 12 months to complete, in time for the Construction Authority to transfer the bridge to the alignment design-build team to construct the track, utilities, systems, etc.

Traffic Impacts:

The construction activities will at times require partial or full lane closures of the eastbound I-210 Freeway. To minimize traffic delays, these closures and related detours will typically occur between Midnight and 5:00 a.m. Skanska USA will be coordinating with the Construction Authority to provide advanced notification of road closures and other project-related impacts through the Construction Authority’s notification channels, including real-time traffic updates through Nixle Wire Words, go511.com, Traffic.com, and certain vehicle-based GPS Navigation Systems.

Meetings/Events

Skanska is working closely with the Construction Authority to ensure that we are being good neighbors to the project area community. Through collaborative public relations efforts, we hope to increase understanding, foster awareness and address community concerns of the I-210 Bridge design and construction activities.

No meetings or events are currently planned.
